'Secret' garden opens to the public

Wednesday, March 12 2008 12:48:57 by Tony Domingo

Gardening News Tony Domingo writes: An eight-acre garden belonging to a former Cheshire mill owner has been opened to the public for the first time.

Quarry Bank Garden in Styal, Wilmslow, dates back to the 18th century and includes fabulous period details such as the most powerful working waterwheel in Europe.

It has recently been restored under the guidance of the National Trust with the help of volunteers who have put it back to its original state.

First created by Samuel Greg and his wife, the garden uses the River Bollin as a focal point for its paths, terraces and riverside walks.

Visitors can learn more about the industrial revolution and watch practical demonstrations in the mill, which produced cotton.

According to an article 24hourmuseum.org.uk, Mr Greg "enhanced existing features such as the sandstone cliffs and the prerequisite hermits cave to add a little drama and mystery to the garden".

It went on to say that rare plants found in the garden will be subject to research later in the year.
