School garden receives grant
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, March 11 2008 13:14:35 by James Cooper
James Cooper writes: A school for children with autism has been given a grant to help it build a new sensory garden.
The local Penarth Times reported that Ashgrove School was given £5,000 from Lottery-funded grants programme Awards for All Wales to develop the garden.
An initial phase of construction was competed in December 2007 and created a beautiful sensory garden. It is thought that the children at the school will especially benefit from a polytunnel which will be used as an outside classroom.
Kerry Cole, a class teacher at the school, explained to the paper: "The garden is a haven for pupils and staff.
"Everyone will benefit from it and the area has transformed our school grounds into a beautiful and stimulating sensory garden."
During the project, children at the school have developed new skills, including gardening and construction.
Ashgrove School is situated in the Vale of Glamorgan and aims to "provide a caring atmosphere in which each child is encouraged to develop effective communication, social and independence skills".
