Blooming plant causes garden stir
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Friday, March 07 2008 11:07:53 by Emily Jenkins
Emily Jenkins writes: A foul smelling blossom is causing a stir at the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
The Carmarthenshire-based outdoor space is home to the amorphophallus konjac, a tropical plant which produces a foul rotting smell when it is in bloom to attract the attention of flies.
A spokesman for the garden revealed his belief that the unique nature of the plant would help attract more visitors.
"I hope people will come along and take a whiff. It's one of nature's gifts," he said.
"Our gardener in charge of the tropical house says it will be stinking the house out by the end of the day. We're hoping the smell will last until the weekend so as many people as possible can experience it," he added.
Meanwhile, a number of Shropshire residents are poised to appeal against the decision of the local council to refuse them garden extensions.
Six residents purchased land behind their properties in order to lengthen their outdoor spaces but have since had their requests turned down.
