Leicestershire trees not victims of sudden oak death
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, March 04 2008 11:01:19 by Leigh Jackson
Leigh Jackson writes: The recent demise of a number of trees in the Leicestershire region is not due to sudden oak death, expects have claimed.
According to the UK Forestry Commission, the disease could not be the cause of the death of around 200 trees in the local area, the BBC reports.
Although the trees had the trademark lesions of the illness, the absence of disease-carrying rhododendron plants in the region meant that sudden oak death was unlikely to be the cause.
A senior scientist at the commission told the broadcaster: "Unless you have infected Rhododendron ponticum in very close proximity to these trees, it can't possibly be sudden oak death," she said.
"And there are no rhododendrons in this woodland, let alone infected ones," she added.
Recently, Phytophthora kernoviae, a fungus-like pathogen, was discovered in two plants in a garden in Argyll, Scotland.
It was the first case of the deadly plant disease to be discovered in the country.
