Gardeners warned to be mindful of birds

Green fingered gardeners in Northern Ireland have been asked to be mindful of new birds' nests in their gardens, after the RSPB warned that unpredictable weather has caused them to start nest-building earlier than usual.
The society said that February and March is the ideal time for gardeners to prune their hedges, but warned that birds may already be inhabiting shrubs, trees and climbers.
Claire Ferry, a spokesperson for the RSPB in Northern Ireland, said: "If you see birds flying about with beakfuls of twigs and dried leaves already, the chances are they have chosen a nest site nearby. So before leaping into action in your garden with the sunny days, please proceed with caution.
"Check any potential sites before cutting and pruning and if you find a nest miss out that area to avoid disturbing the birds or exposing their nest."
The RSPB explained that the change to bird's nesting habits in the Ulster area had been brought about by the unusually warm weather throughout February.
