Sheffield woman visits tree planted 200 years ago by ancestor

A woman from Sheffield has visited one of the city's parks to see a tree that was planted there by her great great grandfather nearly two centuries ago.
Clare Keen visited Norfolk Heritage Park as part of a campaign to protect Victorian tress like the Turkey Oak, which was planted by her ancestor Charles Whittle, a former head gardener at the park.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, councilor John Robinson said: "The Lime and Turkey Oak tree-line carriageways in Norfolk Heritage Park were laid out in the 1840s and are listed as Grade II by English Heritage.
"This is a great opportunity for local people to get involved in preserving our heritage and make sure that these lovely trees are here for future generations."
Meanwhile, a line of ill-fated 100-year-old trees along The Avenue, in Newmarket, has received a stay of execution, after a controversial scheme to uproot the Norway maple and London plane trees was put on hold.
Plans were made to replace them with mature hornbeam trees after complaints were made that the trees' roots were spreading under the pavement and posing a hazard to pedestrians.
