Gardens can appear larger if certain 'tricks' are used

Homeowners who would like a larger garden may not have to move in order to find their ideal outdoor space. According to Gardening Which?, a variety of optical tricks can be used to fully maximise the size of the garden.

The consumer magazine explained that mirrors, trellises and well picked plants can all add to the illusion that a garden is bigger than it really is.

Ceri Thomas, editor of Gardening Which?, said: "Use tricks to deceive the eye like mirrors to give the impression of more space.

"Break up views with things like trellis or planting and buy plants that will thrive in the conditions you have to offer as there is nothing worse than looking at a sickly plant."

She explained that gardeners are currently keen on products that reduce the amount of maintenance required in the garden, noting that computerised irrigation kits which automatically water plants are proving to be quite popular this season.

According to research from Halifax Home Insurance, 150,000 gardens have been affected by the storm weather witnessed in the UK over the last year, with ten per cent suffering damage to plants and five per cent seeing damage to sheds and greenhouses.
