Cup and saucer plant recommended for early spring gardens

Leigh Jackson writes: A plant and garden expert has provided useful tips for a beautiful spring garden, providing an insight into the growth of the cup and saucer plant.
Neil Wormald, a gardening guru with the Times, revealed that the climbing plant, known in Latin as the Cobaea scandens, had the ability grow to great lengths before its first bloom in July.
Mr Wormald wrote: "One of my favourite annual climbers is the cup and saucer plant, which reaches up to 12 feet high and can be used to scramble over pergolas, arches and trelliswork, covering them in bell-shaped, purple-blue flowers from July to September."
And, explaining how to tend to the plant, he continued: "To grow this plant, fill three inch pots with moist seed compost and sow a single seed inside each one. Bury the seeds vertically, just below the compost surface, and then place the pots in a heated propagator at 18 degrees Celsius."
He added: "Once the seedlings emerge, keep them in a warm greenhouse and, after potting-on the young plants into five inch pots, plant them outside when the frosts have passed. A sheltered, sunny spot and well drained soil are essential."
