Battle for gardens reaches high court

Wednesday, February 20 2008 12:38:17 by Tony Domingo

Gardening News Tony Domingo writes: The Park Pharmacy Trust is locked in a High Court Battle with Plymouth City Council over the development of land at a local park.

The trust is hoping that the court will overturn planning permission for a scheme to build four houses at Thorn Park Lodge - which is the current home of a medicinal garden, the Plymouth Herald reports.

If the planning permission is upheld by Mr Justice Jeremy Sullivan, the presiding judge in the case, the garden will be removed, along with a garage. A coach house will also be re-built on the land.

The trust is particularly concerned about the future of the garden, as the plants cultivated there are useful for treating people with disabilities.

Meanwhile, Birmingham residents have raised their concerns over the demolition of a Victorian house in order to seize its garden.

It has been claimed that the property is unfit for restoration, with the land set to be used for the construction of ten new homes.
