National Trust offers plant disease advice

Steve Thompson writes: The National Trust for Scotland has issued resident gardeners with advice on how to tackle Sudden Oak Death.
The disease, also known as Phytophthora ramorum, has been spotted in four gardens in the nation and the National Trust has been working with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and the Scottish Government Rural Payments and Inspections Directorate (SGRPID) to dispense words of wisdom.
Ann Steele, gardens and designed landscapes adviser for the trust, revealed the ways of spotting, and dealing with, the disease.
She told the BBC: "This disease is still very rare in Scotland but it's been a problem in England, so gardeners should watch out if woody plants seem to die quickly, keep gardens and tools clean, buy your plants from a trusted source and if you're concerned, contact your local SGRPID office".
Meanwhile, the Knoll Garden in Dorset is trying to repopulate the local landscape with the elm tree after a number of its species were wiped out around 40-years ago by Dutch elm disease.
