New garden set to open in Sussex
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Thursday, February 14 2008 13:52:50 by Tony Domingo
Tony Domingo writes: Sussex-based South Downs Nurseries is poised to open a new historical garden in Hassocks.
The nursery will open the garden as part of the unveiling of the South Downs Heritage Centre in April this year, with the garden displaying an array of historically significant plants, 24 Hour Museum reports.
Jonathan Tate, the creator of the outdoor space, revealed that garden would provide a special showcase for the agricultural heritage of Sussex.
"A variety of plants will be displayed that are linked with Sussex by name, association or origin," he told the publication.
"The fruit trees are all English varieties, and the apples are all from Sussex. The vegetables are old-fashioned 'heirloom' varieties that would have been more widely grown in days gone by but are still very important for our future," he added.
The garden will also include a number of sculptures and other artworks, which display the use of local materials and history.
