Gardeners advised to aid bird conservation

The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) is calling for keen garden birdwatchers to continue aiding the organisation's bird conservation efforts, following the world's largest bird survey.
It is estimated that 120,000 people were involved in the Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB) Big Garden Birdwatch, which took place last week.
The survey aims to keep track of regional bird populations across the country, by taking an annual snapshot of the changing numbers of garden species through the efforts of people watching from their gardens.
Following the success of the event, the BTO is now calling for volunteers to participate in its year-round monitoring activities.
Mike Toms, BTO Garden BirdWatch organiser, said: "The RSPB's Big Garden BirdWatch is brilliant because it introduces tens of thousands of people to the concept of citizen science, getting them to keep simple notes of the birds using their gardens over a single weekend.
"We want to engage with these people and get them recording birds throughout the year. By doing so, they can make a very valuable contribution to our understanding of how and when birds use gardens, information that can then be used to underpin conservation research."
With the intensive farming methods deployed in many parts of the country, gardens have become a major habitat for wild birds in the UK, and the data collected by "armchair birdwatchers" is crucial in tracking the growth or decline of many different species.
