Trees at risk of fungus

Leigh Jackson writes: A series of trees, which look set to perish due to disease, may be saved with the use of innovative technology.
Mansfield District Council has found that three 200-year-old trees in Carr Bank Park are suffering from fungal infections.
And before making the decision on whether to give them the chop, the council will examine the interior of the trees using a sonic tomography machine, similar to an ultra-scan on a pregnant woman.
Councillor Eddie Smith, claimed that the scan would be worthwhile even if it meant the trees remained alive only in the short-term.
He said: "Although our initial tests paint a bleak picture, we felt it was important in this instance to seek a more detailed assessment - even if it ultimately only means the trees can be saved for a few more months or years."
Recently, the Shropshire Wildlife Trust launched a money-raising campaign to save over 200 ancient holly trees.
