Garden tidy scheme could cost £1 million
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Friday, November 09 2007 16:14:02 by Leigh Jackson
Leigh Jackson writes: A council proposal to help elderly and disabled residents maintain their gardens may have to be scrapped as its total cost could be in excess of £1 million a year.
The scheme, due to be implemented by North Ayrshire council in Scotland, was a key part of Scottish National Party regional election plans.
But with the Scottish government restricting the spending of the councils, North Ayshire may have to abandon its plans, IC Ayrshire reports.
Council leader Ian Snodgrass told the publication that no money had been set aside for the scheme and added: "Members will be aware that the Scottish Government is advising that the local government settlement will be a tight one.
"It is anticipated that 'savings' will be necessary."
Meanwhile, English Heritage has started restoration work on the gardens of Wrest Park, a collection of rare 18th century outdoor spaces.
The Bedfordshire based gardens are being returned to their original state at a cost of £400,000.
