Spring date set for hosepipe law change

Other Garden Machinery Leigh Jackson writes: The government has revealed that new legislation governing hosepipes will be introduced in spring 2008.

It is hoped the new rules will help gardeners to better cope with previously restrictive and inflexible bans based on outdated laws.

The decision comes after consultation between the government and garden industry parties.Environment minister Phil Woolas declared himself pleased with the proposals.

He said: "Our consultation has shown overwhelming support for a change in the law governing the use of hosepipes.

"I am pleased that as a result we have committed to bring in legislation which is bang up to date, reflecting the way we use water today and how that might be affected by drought in the future," he added.

The plans have been warmly welcomed by the Horticultural Trade Association (HTA). Director general David Gwyther told Garden News: "The new code of practice addresses all the areas the HTA demanded."
