Accrington to build 'garden of hope'
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, October 03 2007 09:55:23 by Leigh Jackson
Leigh Jackson writes: Accrington council is putting the finishing touches on ambitious plans to create a new charity garden in the town.
The 'garden of hope' will be a secluded area of the town designed for cancer patients, and other local people to visit and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Clean-up operations have already begun on a disused piece of land and tonnes of topsoil have been delivered to the site so flowers can be planted, the Blackburn Citizen reports.
Fleur Pilkington, who is involved in the project, told the newspaper: "We initially just wanted to tidy up what had become a really grotty area. There was lots of rubbish and people were using it as a dog toilet.
"It is nearly ready now and already it looks fantastic. It is much better than how it used to look and is an attractive place for people to come.
"The idea of making a garden of hope is a wonderful one."
The local Church and Milnshaw area council have put their weight behind the project by donating £1,000 to provide plants and gardening equipment.
