Pensioners' garden revamp complete
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, October 02 2007 10:13:15 by Leigh Jackson
Leigh Jackson writes: Tyneside pensioners have been given the chance to grow their own organic produce - thanks to a £5,000 council grant.
The South Tyneside Council handed the Meadows Care Home the sum to transform a disused patch of land into an attractive outdoor space.
And as well as a vegetable patch, the garden incorporates raised flowerbeds for wheelchair access, a seating area, solar lighting and a water feature, the Shields Gazette reports.
Explaining the benefits of the outdoor space, activities co-coordinator Kay Hemmingway told the publication: "Residents who are keen gardeners will be able to grow a variety of produce, from home-grown leeks, tomatoes and onions to cabbages and rhubarb.
"There may even be opportunities to sell this produce to visiting relatives for the upkeep of the garden."
She added: "The residents are now able to come outside and enjoy a completely secure garden."
"We have beautiful flowers at the moment, and in the summer months residents will be able to sit out with a glass of wine."
