University garden cash plea rejected
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Wednesday, September 12 2007 11:00:00 by Leigh Jackson
Leigh Jackson writes: The Scottish government has turned down a request from Dundee University for money to help run its botanical garden.
The university's green space costs an estimated £170,000 a year to facilitate and the institution had hoped the government might help out with the expense.
However, the request was denied and the university now looks set to scale down the garden in attempt to cut back on spending, the Tayside and Fife Courier reports.
Commenting on the decision, environment secretary Richard Lochhead told the publication: "It is a matter for the university to determine how it prioritises the use of such funds.
Urging the university to consider requesting local funding, he added: "I suggest that obtaining alternative sources of funding is more a matter for local consideration. There are examples of local authorities funding gardens at Glasgow and St Andrews."
Meanwhile, the Scottish government has pledged to give Edinburgh's botanic garden £10 million, as it is permitted to do under the National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985.
