Conker trees face disease threat
Mowdirect news > Gardening News

Leigh Jackson writes:
Thousands of conker trees could be in major peril as a deadly disease sweeps across the country. The condition, known as bleeding canker, is a fungus that attacks the horse chestnut trees by eating around the bark leaving them in a dangerous condition, the BBC reportsBleeding canker has been affecting trees up and down the country but Nottinghamshire is the most affected. Thousands of trees that adorn the county's streets and gardens may have to be cut down if they are found to be affected. Infected trees typically have brown leaves and the number of conkers that the plants produce suffers a serious decline. However, it does not seem likely that the plant will be facing extinction. Dr Trevor Mabbett, a leading plant pathologist told the broadcaster: "I don't think you're going to see them (the trees) all go completely and quickly like with the Dutch Elm Disease - but it is a serious problem."
