Rare plant grows to smashing lengths

A rare plant, thought to only bloom once its life cycle, has grown so tall that it has smashed through the roof of its greenhouse home.The plant, a Mexican variety known as agave americana, is being looked after by experts at the University of Bangor and has now sprouted a 5ft tall flower stalk - indicating that it is finally ready to bloom.Nigel Brown planted the seed for the century plant, as it is commonly known, back in 1979 and, after waiting 28 years for signs of blossom, has been captivated by its recent progress.He told the BBC: "It has grown steadily to dominate the south-eastern corner of the display, its crown of rather untidy but impressive succulent leaves spewing out across the gravel like some monstrous creation from the Little Shop of Horrors."The plant is commonly used in South America to make tequila.
