Gardening lifer calls it quits

Monday, September 10 2007 10:29:14 by Leigh Jackson

Gardening News Leigh Jackson writes: A gardener from Stoke-on-Trent, who took care of the area's green spaces for almost half a century, has finally hung up his shears.

Harold Hancock began his career in 1958 as a tender 16-year-old seedling and his 49-year long tenure blossomed, enabling him to become longest serving council worker in the area, the BBC reports.

The 65-year-old, who only had five sick days in his whole working life, told the broadcaster: "I remember my first day - 18 September, 1958. I was 16 and straight out of school.

"It was a Monday morning and I was given a lift from my mum's house in Gillow Heath, in Biddulph, to Tunstall in a friend's pick-up.

"We would be known as the Wild Bunch and things were not very mechanical in those days - it was very hard work. It was a great innovation when we finally got a tractor in 1970."

Meanwhile, allotment holders in Corby, Northamptonshire, are refusing to leave their land despite the fact that it may be sold by its owners, Corus.
