Mansfield gardeners promote a healthy lifestyle
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Tuesday, September 04 2007 10:42:15 by Leigh Jackson
Leigh Jackson writes: Greenfingered residents from the Mansfield Community Allotment are promoting a healthy lifestyle by using gardening as a form of exercise and the fruits of their labour for sensible eating.
The scheme has been taken up by around 150 locals who will make use of the nearby Barratts Field allotment site.
The project targeted residents who had existing health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease and those that simply required more exercise.
Councillor Eddie Smith, who is involved with the project, told Chad.co.uk: "I am thrilled that the community allotment project has been so well received and those taking part are already seeing the benefits of exercise and healthy eating."
Healthy, organic fruit and vegetables from the scheme have already been harvested and the gardeners are looking forward to their second helping.
Meanwhile, a survey by Dairy Farmers of Britain found that an astonishing five per cent of schoolchildren think that chips grow on farms.
