Yorkshire town "to evict" owners of messy gardens
Mowdirect news > Gardening News
Thursday, August 30 2007 11:32:13 by Joseph Clift
Joseph Clift writes: Council tenants in the Yorkshire town of Barnsley could lose their homes should they fail to keep their gardens in an acceptable condition.
The possible evictions have been announced by Berneslai Homes, which runs the town's council estates.
Litter and graffiti were cited by the operator in particular as potential grounds for eviction.
In a statement, the housing company said that a special scheme along these lines has already met with some success.
"All ten of Berneslai Homes Impact Teams were asked to identify the ten worst gardens in their area," the statement reads. "Once identified tenants of the 100 gardens were sent a letter asking them to tidy up their gardens.
"After one week the results were outstanding with 34 gardens tidied up or showing significant signs of improvement. This increased to 65 after three weeks and 27 out of the 35 gardens, which were not improving were placed with a neighbourhood pride order and work was recharged to them.
"Legal proceedings have begun against a further three residents," the housing group added.
