11-foot sunflower grown in UK

An enormous sunflower in Yorkshire has attracted the media's attention - with some speculating that it will become the biggest ever in the UK.
From a seed planted by five-year-old Terence and two-year-old Kirsty Vanwyk from Acomb, the high-altitude Helianthus has now grown to 11 feet.
Their father Mauby Vanwyck, told the York Press: "I've never seen one taller than that.
"I'm not all that green-fingered, I don't really have the time, but the kids are really chuffed with it."
However, the plant has some way to go before it can claim to be the tallest sunflower on record.
According to the Guinness Book of Records, the highest in history, grown by Martien Heijms of Oirschot, The Netherlands in 1986, measured over 25 feet.
The largest ever sunflower head, grown in Canada, also measured over 32 inches.
Those who want to enjoy the flowers but are rather more pressed for space - might like to know that the plants can be grown using the Bonsai technique, too!
