Derbyshire gardens apply for lottery funding

Local councillors say that a historic garden in Derbyshire needs a total of £3 million to restore it to its former state.
According to Amber Valley Borough Council, the Belper River Gardens on the River Derwent require outside help to fund its renovation work.
The council has already allocated a £1.6 million fund for the site, and said last week that it wants the lottery to match that sum for improvements and maintenance to go ahead.
Councillor Jack Brown MBE, cabinet member for clean and green at Amber Valley Borough Council, said: "Our vision is to restore this beautiful park back to its former glory. Since it was created over 100 years ago, certain areas of the park have deteriorated and are in quite urgent need of repair and refurbishment.
"If our lottery bid is successful we intend to use the money to make significant improvements to the park, and create an educational centre linked to the existing facilities in the nearby Derwent Valley Visitor Centre."
Under the proposals, the garden's promenade would be repaired and its Swiss tea rooms - currently in a "derelict" condition - refurbished.
Should the funds be received, the work at Belper River would take around a decade.
