National Allotment Week in full swing

This week is marked by keen urban gardeners up and down the country as National Allotment Week.
The annual event, inaugurated in 2002, is organised as a joint venture between the National Allotment Gardens Trust (NAGS) and the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners (NSALG).
Plots up and down the country have been asked to open up the sites to the public, to exhibit their produce and to arrange school visits to teach children about allotments.
Demonstration plots, including one in London's St James' Park, have also been organised, as has an exhibition of the history of allotments at RHS Rosemoor, Devon.
According to the NSALG, National Allotment Week "is a chance for Allotment Sites, Allotmenteers and Landlords to work together to promote the UK's most popular hobby!
"The whole country has seen an explosion in interest in Allotment Gardening. Not only is it enjoyed for the healthy exercise it provides, but also for the abundance of great quality, affordable food."
However, the celebrations come during worrying times for Britain's plot holders.
In a bid to reduce waiting lists, local councils across the country are being encouraged to reduce the size of allotments to cram more users in, the Daily Telegraph reported this week.
