Eco-compost launched

A new eco-compost has been launched, specifically developed by its makers - the Norfolk-based John Innes Foundation - with "environmental concerns" in mind.
The new Genie range, manufactured by Vital Earth, represents an evolution in composting which might have a "revolutionising" effect in the industry.
Genie differs from market competitors in that it uses green waste and forestry by-products along with a slow-release nitrogen fertiliser, The Garden reports.
A spokesperson for John Innes also confirmed to the magazine that "the composts are made in an enclosed vessel that keeps the mixes free from airborne weed seed and are protected from the weather, which helps maintain consistent quality".
Vital Earth claims: "Genie composts are 100 per cent peat-free with no added chemicals and use only recycled sustainable materials - specially researched and selected to consistently provide all essential plant nutrients in a well-balanced and long-lasting form.
"Such organic nutrients are released over a long period, reducing the need for feeding."
The product is the first time that the research centre has released new growing media since its original recipe, which was developed over 70 years ago.
