Homebuyers pay premium for garden

Friday, August 10 2007 11:57:26 by Editor

Gardening News The national stereotype of Britons being a nation of garden-lovers received further reinforcement today, as new research reveals that homebuyers are generally willing to pay a premium for a property with a garden.

Figures from Halifax Estate Agents showed that eight out of ten home buyers were willing to pay more for a house with a garden.

An extra sum of £10,000 was the average price cited by respondents to a survey conducted by the agents, with 10 per cent willing to pay £20,000 and hardcore garden lovers, a total of four per cent, willing to pay £30,000.

Colin Kemp, managing director of Halifax Estate Agents, said: "Our research shows that many of us will pay a premium for a property with a garden.

"Making the most of your home's outside space could add real value and maximise any sale price."

The survey also found that the likelihood of paying more for a garden went up among married couples - 84 per cent of whom were willing to pay extra - and among the 35 to 44 age group, with 88 per cent willing to shell out for a garden.
