At plant producer Ball Colegrave's most recent open day, current plant trends were discussed by experts - giving an interesting insight into the future of gardens in the UK..
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) reports that the company expects "significant and rapid change" to hit the industry in years to come, partially due to statistics showing that gardens were getting smaller.
In remarks which also hold implications for the garden tools business, marketing manager at Ball Colegrave Stuart Lowen said that "upward", or "vertical" gardening would increase in importance, with features such as raised displays and hanging baskets becoming more common.
Garden centres would also need to amend their practice to "provide more in the way of help, design and innovation to…marginal gardeners, basically leading the market by showing how plants could be used in the garden, providing ideas, help, advice and tips", the RHS reports.
Mr Lowen also told attendees at the open day that garden centres had recorded increasing demand for single-colour planting.
