More growing vegetables in their gardens

A shift towards British gardeners growing so-called "heirloom" vegetables is detectable in current buying trends, new research has shown.
According to Thompson & Morgan seed and plant catalogues, demand for the produce is on the rise.
Old-fashioned potato cultivars such as Highland Burgundy Reds - recently sold at Waitrose - are particularly in demand, a trend which vegetable product manager Colin Randel attributed to "nostalgia" on the customers' side.
"Supermarkets, restaurants and television also play a part", he added. "People buy it, like it, and want to grow it themselves."
Mr Randel also advised customers to be aware of the potential problems in growing the produce: "These conservation potatoes just dont have the blight resistance of modern cultivars. And this year has been particularly bad for blight and black leg. My advice is to be in quick with your order."
The Thompson & Morgan catalogue will be updated to reflect this new demand, with extra varieties to be offered, he added.
