'Garden grabbing' in Lichfield angers residents

Residents in Lichfield are up in arms over another case of 'garden grabbing' from developers.
Construction company Charles Church has applied to the local council to buy up two detached homes, and replace them with 13 new houses.
The phrase 'garden grabbing' refers to a practice among developers whereby houses with big gardens are bought up and properties demolished, with many smaller properties built in their place to maximise profits. Garden space is therefore decimated by the practice.
Local resident Sheila James told the Lichfield Mercury that "these houses are inappropriate - a row of terraces would be oppressive and there are none in this part of the city".
The government delayed its land use bill - which would reclassify gardens to protect them from garden grabbing - last month. It is now to be heard in October.
The campaign coalition Save Our Gardens expressed concern over this decision, saying that an area equivalent to 2,755 football pitches will be lost to the phenomenon over the next decade if nothing was done.
