While Britain's lawnmower owners might prefer to make their grass cutting as quick and convenient an operation as possible, a rather more hardcore group take a different view.
The blue riband event of the British Lawnmower Racing Association (BLMRA) is to take place this Saturday at Pulborough, Sussex.
Racing each other at speeds of over 20mph, the motorised mowers will cover over 300 miles during the endurance event, which is expected to last a full 12 hours.
More than 50 teams - ranging from farmers to businessmen to professional motorbike racers Guy Martin and Karl Harris - are slated to take part.
The vehicles are grouped according to power, with bonneted mowers, Lawnbugs and tow-behind mowers all facing off in their respective classes.
The event, which has proved popular with both celebrities such as former formula one driver Sir Stirling Moss and legendary hellraiser Oliver Reed in the past, is anticipated to draw a large crowd.
Tickets cost £4, with under-12s let in free.
