Inspirational blind photographer shoots Botanic Garden

Friday, July 20 2007 11:40:25 by Editor

Gardening News An amazing garden photographic exhibition will feature at the Edinburgh festival this year.

"Two Voices" by Rosita McKenzie, featuring the city's Botanic Garden, being held at Inverleith House from July 28th into October, is unique, because its photographer is blind.

The exhibition consists of twelve images, focussing not just on the gardens, but the herbarium and the library - parts generally closed to the public that visitors "cannot see".

Ms McKenzie, who lost her sight at 11, uses an assistant when taking her pictures, who carefully describes the scene around her. Then, using a special technology which adapts the images, she can even "see" her photographs, with raised dots allowing her to read the pictures.

These "raised" images will also be exhibited alongside the originals, allowing other visually impaired people to enjoy the show.

The artist said that her family was "always describing things to me and, where possible, they helped me to explore them through touch. So in a way, that gave me a keen interest not to just sit back and not take part."
Paul Nesbitt, director of Inverleith House who commissioned the exhibition, added: "Rosita also has amazing powers of awareness, understanding, and intelligence, with the ability to read a situation, something many good artists have.
"We tend to think this imagery and blind people don't go together but Rosita has convinced me that blind people have images inside their head."
Ms McKenzie now plans to photograph three other specialist gardens across Scotland.
