Tatton Park Flower Show opens today
The Royal Horticultural Society's Tatton Park Flower show opens today, with an estimated 100,000 visitors expected to attend.
The competition hosts 47 show gardens, which will compete for the bronze, silver gilt, silver and gold medals on offer.
Several top companies have commissioned gardens, including previous winner Cater Allen, the private bank. Its "private" garden, created by two-time Tatton gold medallist Jamie Dunstan, is built around an outdoor sofa, representing "a small and personal retreat from the stresses and strains of everyday life", according to managing director Richard Dunn.
Torrential rain is forecast for the weekend. A spokesperson for the show, expressing concern that the big crowds anticipated might cause obstructions if they all brought umbrellas with them, recommended that visitors wore waterproof clothing instead.
They added: "The weather certainly hasn't affected people's spirits. Everyone has been helping one another out and sheltering under each other's gazebos."
Rainstorms earlier in the week had disrupted the competition's gardeners' preparations, with judging delayed until yesterday afternoon to give them time to prepare properly.
