Kew Gardens: Britain's wild plants under threat

Britain's wild plants are under threat from climate change, a report from Kew Gardens warns today.
Industrial and urban sprawl, as well as a perceived decline in interest in botany, also puts pressure on the plants' survival prospects, it adds.
The report, completed with help from charity Plantlife International and government body the Joint Nature Conservation Committee, was commissioned to check that conservation targets were being met in the UK.
Its recommendations include improved botanical education in schools and major government initiatives to provide ecosystems which would adapt to climate change.
The report claims that "questions over how quickly plants can move and colonise new ground make the UK's special habitats and their plants and fungi particularly vulnerable" to the changing weather, with wild plant habitats having previously been fragmented and isolated due to urban, industrial and agricultural expansion.
As an example, the report points to the plight of Meadow Clary, an ancient native plant, which, having thrived for millennia, is now reduced to just 24 sites in the entire country due to the growth of farmland.
