MP in tractor crash as publicity stunt backfires

A Bedfordshire MP was caught in an embarrassing tractor crash last week as a photo-op went badly wrong.

Nadine Dorries, Tory member for Mid Beds, veered off the circuit while driving a mini Massey Ferguson in a celebrity tractor race, also featuring the Cheeky Girls, at London's Covent Garden.

A BBC cameraman recording the event was slightly injured in the ensuing crash.

Ms Dorries, while proclaiming herself "almost too embarrassed to speak", nevertheless commented that "I have never driven a tractor in my life."

She added that organisers "did not show me until afterwards that there was a brake pedal. Now I know where the brake pedal is I wouldn't mind having another go."

The Red Tractor food assurance scheme had organised the race to promote Red Tractor Week, which also featured the launch of a cookbook and discount offers on farm produce at supermarkets.

The scheme is a quality control system which aims to ensure that UK farm products reach acceptably high standards.
