Scythes proving popular in West Country

Rather than adapting to more modern methods of mowing such as utilising a scythe bar mower, the West Country Scything Festival in Somerset is a celebration of this ancient art of gardening.
Last Sunday's event was attended by locals as well as Poles and Slovaks, who were responding to fliers printed in their mother tongue in Muchelney, near Langport.
Commenting on the event to the BBC, organiser Simon Fairley remarked: "Eastern Europeans have maintained the traditions of mowing by hand, whereas in the UK it very nearly died out."
A five metre by five metre patch was successfully scythed by Ray Lister from Northants last year in a time of three minutes and 30 seconds. A scythe versus strimmer contest was also displayed. That time was smashed this year by winner of the mens' competition, Steve Friend, who completed his work in just two minutes 13 seconds, without a scythe bar mower in sight.
Mr Fairley: "There's been a revival in interest in scythes, people find them much more pleasant to use than strimmers but it is a skill that takes some time to acquire."
