This summer will see homeowners making purchases worth a collective sum of £56 million on their gardens, new research undertaken by insurer esure has discovered.
The insurer has therefore decided to increase the amount of cover offered by its home insurance policy in order to add extra protection for things such as garden tools, furniture and decking.
Most popular items to be acquired by gardening enthusiasts during the summer were found to be plants and shrubs (64%), garden furniture (26%), followed by garden tools (23%) then patio and decking (15%) and lastly, pond or water features (10%).
Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance for esure, commented: "With the lighter evenings and pleasant summertime temperatures, many of us will be spending more time and money on our gardens, than the inside of our homes and will be splashing out on costly new garden furniture and equipment.
"However, it is all too easy to retire inside as it gets darker, leaving items unsecured in our gardens or sheds unlocked as easy targets for opportunistic thieves."
According to esure, summer is the prime time for thieves to be on the prowl but 52 per cent stated that they had not given a thought to improving security measures to protect items such as garden power tools, water pumps and lawnmowers.
