Garden tool warning ahead of Child Safety Week

The Electrical Safety Council has issued a list of helpful hints and tips to ensure that household items are kept out of the reach of children ahead of Child Safety Week.

Starting next Monday (June 18th), the awareness campaign looks to not only keep dangerous electrical items like power tools away from little hands, but also to teach children about electricity and the safest way to use it.

According to the Electricity Safety Council, thousands of children are injured by electrical goods each year. The council's director, Phil Buckle, told the North West Evening Mail: "Young children in particular do not understand the dangers of electricity and as a result, they can be very vulnerable.

"While there are obvious things that parents should look out for such as damaged plugs, sockets and flexes…other hazards might not be so immediately obvious."

Mr Buckle went on to say that colourful designs on power tools could attract a child's interest. The toy versions of equipment like electrical drills and saws could also lead the child to think that a gardener's tools are toys too.

He advised parents to watch out in particular for items like hedge cutters, electrical pumps for inflatables and lawnmowers and to lock them away when they're not in use.
