HTA backs Tesco's Dobbies acquisition

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has urged gardening enthusiasts to welcome the news that Tesco is bidding to buy-out gardening chain Dobbies.

According to the HT's statement, Tesco was a good company to takeover the garden-related product line as it had openly recognised the fact that gardening was becoming increasingly popular, as well as recognising the importance of the industry's potential for improving the environment.

Tesco should also be praised for its ability to recognise the key demographic and social attitude changes occurring in Britain - in particular, a population which is growing older but enjoying good health and wealth.

The HTA did stress however, that it was wary of other high street chains deciding to take over well-established gardening centres, adding: "We may well be witnessing the beginnings of a substantial step-change in the structure of the UK garden retail industry."

"If so, this will have a substantial effect on the supply side as well."
