50 Connect - a website dedicated to consumers over the age of 50 - has issued a list of the best ways to protect the contents of your garden shed.
Opportunistic thieves with a penchant for lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and strimmers appear to be on the rise, prompting many home insurance companies to urge gardeners to ensure their garden equipment is covered by their contents insurance.
In addition, the British Crime Survey recently revealing that 22 per cent of vandalism claims are for damage to garden walls and fences, with a further 11 per cent accounting for destroyed garden ornaments.
To help protect garden sheds and their contents, 50 Connect has come up with a list of ways to prevent burglars attempting any sort of theft on your property.
Gravel pathways can deter would-be trespassers because of its noisy nature and hedges and high fences could also put off a possible thief. Security lights and infrared beams were also recommended by the site, along with tree-anchors or chains for expensive trees and shrubs.
The website also recommends that gardeners invest in a heavy-duty padlock for locking away all power tools and garden equipment, as well as taking photographs of any expensive items which, along with the receipts, will help with the insurance claim should the worst happen.
