Get children involved in mowing safely

Gardening is a great past time for children but lawn mowers are one garden tool which require adult supervision as the thousands of accidents involving mowers and children last year demonstrate.
To help, here are some guidelines for families who want to include children in lawn tendering but are aware that safety precautions need to be taken. Firstly, always ensure children are at least 12 years old before taking charge of a mower and make sure they are wearing sturdy shoes, not sandals.
Secondly, make sure they are appropriately kitted out with eye and hearing protection if this is a big job, while very young children should be completely cleared of areas about to be mowed.
Show youngsters how to pick up stray stones and debris from lawns before mowing to avoid accidents and also instruct on the importance of never pulling a mower in reverse.
"Many people don't realise how extensive lawn mower-related injuries can be - they can really take a toll on families," said Dr Roxanne Guy, who campaigns for mower safety.
She said blades should be left to adults to change.
