Manual lawnmowers are not something you would necessarily associate with our gas-guzzling counterparts over the Atlantic but according to Hemscott.com, a finance and investment analyst, push-powered mowers are becoming increasingly popular.
The American Lawn Mower Company claims that annual sales of manual lawnmowers are currently around the 350,000 mark and are continuing to rise year on year.
These figures may be dwarfed by the six million petrol-powered mowers which were also sold last year, but increases in sales have been enough to attract the attention of several green investment opportunists.
Teri McClain, inside sales administrator at the 112-year-old American Lawn Mower Company in Shelbyville, Indiana, told the magazine that continual headlines about global warming, pollution and vanishing natural resources were making the public change their habits.
Smaller gardens area also having an impact, with the relatively-low maintenance push-a-long mower making more financial sense as well as helping the newly eco-conscious Americans to feel better about their gardens.
Terry Jarvis, president of Sunlawn Incorporated, said that the manufacturers had also noted that it tended to be female gardeners who came into the stores looking for a push-powered mower.
"Women like the simplicity of the machines, the fact that they work," he said. "I constantly hear women commenting 'I love the useful exercise'."
