Grass and hedge advice from Echo

Monday, June 04 2007 10:59:37 by Editor

Echo It's the beginning of a new month, which means it's time for Echo Tools to offer its latest batch of advice for novice gardeners.

June, with its long, hot, sunny days and cool evenings, is the time to concentrate on your lawns and hedges, according to the experts at Echo Tools.

As well as battling the ever-present weeds with a quality hoe, gardeners have to contend with drought problems, though the heat at least slows the grass' growth levels so the lawnmower need only make an appearance once every fortnight.

Echo recommends mulch cutting to help your lawn seal in the moisture from the infrequent showers this month, helping to keep your lawn look green and reducing water wastage. It also urges gardeners not to forget about the lawn edges and to invest in a good-quality strimmer if they don't have one already.

Hedges also need special treatment at this time of year, with fast growing hedging such as leylandi, lonicera and privet needing regular trimming sessions. Kerria japonica should also be pruned and any New Zealand Holly should be lightly trimmed after it has finished flowering.

Some hedges are in need of a real hacking job this month, including hawthorn and prunes cerasifera, while box, elaeagnus macrophylla and osmanthus delavayi could benefit from a slight trim.
