Gardeners warned to lock up their tools to prevent break-ins

A serial thief is thought to be using gardeners' own tools against them as a way of breaking into their houses, according to a report in the Scotsman.
Police officers in the Trinity and Newhaven areas outside Edinburgh believe that a dozen house break-ins have been carried out using the homeowners own garden tools, including rakes, spades and handheld gardening machines, as a way of gaining entry to their property.
To avoid being arrested for "going equipped to steal", convicted thieves are picking up items found near the properties to smash or force open windows and doors, prompting a call from local police officers for gardeners to securely lock up garden implements such as spades and trowels.
Speaking to the Scotsman, Trinity councillor Allan Jackson said: "Trinity is an area which has a high number of gardens, making it particularly vulnerable to this method of gaining entry.
"I would urge residents to ensure they keep their sheds padlocked and pick up all tools which may be left lying around."
Steve Cardownie, Newhaven councillor, added: "I would echo the police warning to keep sheds securely locked and put away all tools from gardens."
