Treat your lawn before the cold snap sets in

Gardeners who wish to give their lawn a health check are advised to spend some time treating their lawn before the predicted cold snap sets in, according to recommendations by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).

The first step is to invest in a good scarifier to help lift out the dead grass, moss and other foliage before aerating compact lawns by spiking it with an aerator or a good quality gardening fork.

This will prevent damage from winter flooding and will allow all the necessary nutrients to reach the base of the grass roots, producing a healthier, greener lawn in the spring.

Top dressing corrects surface irregularities and improves the texture of difficult soils and the RHS recommends a simple mixture of three parts sandy loam, six parts sharp sand and one part compost or leafmould.

Finally, to give your lawn a pristine finish, use a lawn edging tool to flatten any unsightly bumps and lumps by slicing through the uneven turf and tolling it back and correcting the soil beneath it before relaying the turf.
