Gov cites gardening as top way to boost happiness

Gardening has often been heralded for its therapeutic qualities but now the government has named it as one of the top ways to make the public happier.
January, with its dark, grey days, has been named the most depressing month in the year, according to a government committee designed to find out how ministers can make us more cheerful, so investing in an activity to cheer us all up is certainly worthwhile.
Committee members are hard at work analysing a review of studies from around the world, looking at what influences happiness and how governments can affect it. In doing so, they have taken on board advice from one of London Imperial College's experts, Professor Paul Dolan.
Prof Dolan's latest report has revealed that gardening really can add to a person's sense of well-being, along with taking a long walk, chatting over the garden fence to neighbours and expressing a concern for endangered species.
By contrast, the report also found that extremes in weather, such as heavy rain and living in a polluted environment, are not only bad for your garden, but bad for your mental wellbeing.
