It’s one of the great mysteries that has been baffling gardeners for generations.
Why do weeds grow more quickly than flowers and vegetables?
Currently banks of thick weeds are flourishing on verges and around the edges of gardens spoiling the overall look of the garden.
There is a range of machines from USA company DR designed to deal with this and their basic trimmer is this one, the DR TR4 Premier Wheeled Trimmer-Mower – Recoil Start (DRMP60).
This machine is easy to push along and has a 163cc Briggs & Stratton engine, easy to start and maintain, to turn the strimming lines.
This line is thicker than that used by other machines enabling it cut through really thick banks of grasses and nettles – it has working heights from 38mm to 98mm.,
The machine is mounted on a heavy-duty steel frame with the strimming head offset to the left so you can trim close to fence and wall edges.
Large wheels mean it is easy to push along even in thick vegetation and it has an aluminium front bumper to protect if is there is an accidental collision with a tree or wall.
The cutter head has a clutch to stop the trimming cord and the handlebars are adjustable and padded to reduce vibration levels.
Delivered free the next working day it costs £549, £50 off the recommended price and it has a two-year warranty.
One customer commented: ‘Excellent Machine. Very easy to set up and started first pull. Clears rough grass and bracken effectively with much less effort than my handheld brush cutter/strimmer.’
A similar machine but with an electric start is the DR TR4 Premier Wheeled Trimmer-Mower – Electric Start (DRMP61) which costs £100 more (‘Easy to use, fitting new lines, in particular, is easy. Very pleased with it,’ said one customer.
The company’s top of the range machine is this one, the DR TR4 PRO-XL Self-Propelled Wheeled Trimmer-Mower – Electric Start (DRMP57) with a 190cc Briggs & Stratton engine made to deal with the thickets scrub and brushGreat advice on product selection from MowDirect and quick delivery

And a metal blade can be fitted to this one as well.
The electric start means it is simplicity itself to fire up and it can handle very rough ground as it is fitted with variable speed transmission.
There are five cutting heights from 38mm to 89mm and again the cutting head is offset to enable you to cut close to fence and wall edges.
It costs £1099, £200 less than the recommended price and is delivered free of charge the next working day with a two-year warranty.
