Yesterday’s excellent blog from Mr Dick Roberts, the brilliant, effervescent and ebullient Bin-ends Bombardier, would have been accompanied if it were an audio blog, by the sound of rain and wind. However, that is all set to change and the weather is on the turn.
When it does settle, and particularly now as it’s National Gardening week, (huzzah) many of us will be thinking about to do more with make our lawns, and make stand out, not just keep them green and pleasant.
Dick was extolling the virtues of Hayter rear roller mowers, in particular, the Hayter Spirit 41 Petrol Push Rear-Roller Lawnmower with its 41cm cutting width and easy-starting 125cc Briggs & Stratton engine and the newly redesigned and fluffed-up Hayter Harrier 41 Autodrive Variable-Speed Rear-Roller Lawnmower and there is no doubt that these excellent, popular, high-quality machines can give you superb stripes, achieved flattening of grass blades as you move up and down across the lawn.
This is an optical illusion or effect, caused by the light bouncing back differently depending on which way the blades bend and where you are standing. There is less light reflected from the blades that point towards you, than the light bouncing back from the broadest part of the blades as they are pointing away, making one run look dark and the other light.

It is all, therefore about flattening grass blades in different directions and great effects can be got from doing this. You, of course, have the classic stripes used by football clubs and other sports clubs all over.
But, in fact, various groundsmen of football clubs last season, notably from Leicester and Southampton, created some rather more amazing patterns on their grounds. Spirals, tartans, swooping curves and so on became widespread. These were then summarily banned by the eternally fun-loving and forward thinking FA.
