Another spring, another spring competition. Our latest Mower giveaway fest closed on the 6th and we have a deserving winner. The successful entrant and winner of our UK designed, petrol powered Cobra M4OC Lawn Mower is Jane Bates with her comical story of lawn mowing and shelled reptiles.
Jane’s prize is powerful, great value and smart and if you fancy one for yourself it is available at an amazing price of £159.99.
We’ve had a fabulous collection of entries from the strictly serious and advisory to the touching to the whimsical and from reading through all of them, it seems a lot of you need new lawnmowers. I’d visit these pages if you need a great new mower at a great price. These mowers are all 4/5 star reviewed superstars and the customer comments speak for themselves.
Any road up, back to the competition. We loved reading all the entries and your different styles and we have picked a few favourites, as well as the winner, that we thought were worthy of publishing.
We asked you what your first job would be in the garden this spring.
So here, in no particular order (except the winner is at the end) are our five favourites. We have done a little editing for ease of reading in some cases. Well done to all of these final five.
We start with the WINNING ENTRY from Jane Bates. a nice story to start the season…
Mowing the lawn, so my tortoises can see where they’re going and I can see where they are. Once, when the grass was almost as high as the tortoises, I got worried because one hadn’t moved all afternoon. I finally realised I’d been watching a rugby ball.
Yes. There’s a serious message leading from this. Make sure you check your grass and hedgerows for hedgehogs, birds, frogs, toads tortoises and the neighbour’s cat before you start chopping, pruning, mowing and so on. Well done Jane.
However, in case it happens again, here’s some help for you…
OK?
Some entries were more simple but no less important. Like Julie Louise Easby’s straightforward and sensible advice…
Tidy everything up, dig dirt over and mow lawn.
Quite right. The annual pre-mow tidy is an essential task and can save time later on. You might even find that trowel you lost in September.
Then there’s a comprehensive list of tasks from the obviously hard-working son of the soil, Frank E Davidson, which made me want to just sit down and have a cup of tea just reading it. Absolutely sound stuff though
After sowing and tool maintenance / sharpening / painting which are inside jobs and complete by spring, I examine outhouses, structures and hardstanding for winter storm damage and order up materials for repair, carefully trying to avoid looking at the lawns lest I panic “Oh no, I’m going to have to rake, aerate and cut that, am I?”
Phew! Don’t worry Frank, you’ll get that lawn sorted. Why not try scarifying.
The next on our casual favourites list is the work of a good-hearted and helpful, all-round great neighbour Martin Adams. This is something we could all do, or do with, the occasional helping hand for our less able neighbours.
Cut mine and neighbour’s grass as she’s 90 and can’t do it herself. She insists on paying me but I won’t take it – least I can do for the older generation.
I hope someone will do that for me when I can no longer lift the handles of my mower. Perhaps next week.
Finally, we have the wise words and well-organised thoughts of Mr Marc Carroll, who clearly knows his onions when it comes to spring tasks
Garden tidy – up de-weed grass, cut and strimmed edges, cut borders, tidied up, cut back dead plants ready for new growth. Pressure wash all paths decking etc Check your Mowers and garden equipment is fit for purpose and use new spark plugs. Oil, petrol, sharpen blades, clean down the equipment and if needed scarification all ready for the summer.
So that’s it until next time. Keep your eyes peeled for more competitions during the season.
